6 Months ago I got my new grad offer from my "dream company" rescinded with tech layoffs. This had a big impact on my mental health and I was about to fall back into depression. I always knew that I want to build a side project to make money online, so I decided that I won't https://t.co/jXm9ZnUBoM
Chatbase just crossed $1.25M in life time sales. A year ago I was devastated I didn't get a return offer from Meta. This was the best thing to happen to me. What is Chatbase?
Chatbase is a bootstrapped AI customer support / “chat with your data” platform founded by solo founder Yasser Elsaid in 2023, and has grown from $0 to roughly $8–10M ARR in about three years, entirely without VC funding, driven largely by X/Twitter virality and product-led growth
How Chatbase got their first customers
Viral X launch with a tiny audience
Yasser’s initial tweet to 16 followers went viral, directly driving early signups and revenue; this was the trigger for hitting $1M ARR in 117 days. He leaned into “build in public” threads on X, sharing revenue, technical details, and roadmap, which created trust and FOMO in the indie hacker and AI builder communities.
Reddit community seeding
Early traction came from posting about “chat with your PDF” and later customer-support use cases in relevant subreddits (SaaS, entrepreneurship, productivity), driving free trials and early paid users. These posts focused on concrete pain points (answering docs, automating customer questions), acting as hand-rolled demand validation and low-cost acquisition.
"Chat with PDF" hook and a clear use case
The initial product hook—“chat with your PDFs”—was simple, shareable, and instantly understandable, which drove word of mouth. As enterprise demand increased, they reframed the same underlying tech as “AI customer support” and “customer-facing AI agents,” enabling higher ACV and B2B positioning.
Building in public
Yasser consistently shared revenue updates and milestones publicly (e.g., $3M, $5M, $8M ARR), turning growth into a social proof loop that itself attracted more customers and press. This “public scoreboard” helped him appear in newsletters, case study sites, and podcasts—compounding reach without ad spend.
Positioning shift from consumer tool to enterprise support
He pivoted from individual users chatting with personal PDFs to businesses embedding Chatbase on websites for customer support, which improved monetization and retention significantly.
